当該期間の全体テーマは、“Diversity is a fact; inclusion is an act.”「ダイバーシティは事実(fact)であり、インクルージョンは行動(act)である」としています。

Seminar overview

This seminar is a joint initiative bringing together the Graduate School of Human Sciences’ work on DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion), supported by the programme to accelerate implementation of the OU Master Plan 2027, and the period for strengthening DE&I initiatives organised by UOsaka’s Center for Diversity & Inclusion.

The seminar will take place in December with Dr Sarabajaya Kumar, a cross-appointed academic from University College London (UCL), one of UOsaka’s Global Knowledge Partners. Dr Kumar is hosted by the Graduate School of Human Sciences. She will deliver a keynote address on UCL’s EDI (Equality, Diversity & Inclusion) policies, followed by a panel discussion with representatives from relevant units at UOsaka.

The University of Osaka’s Center for Diversity & Inclusion has designated June to December 2026 as a period for strengthening DE&I initiatives and is organising a range of training sessions and other activities. The overarching theme is “Diversity is a fact; inclusion is an act.”

Aims

The seminar aims to reconsider UOsaka’s systems, environment and support provision from the perspectives of disabled people, and to inform future policies and initiatives towards an environment in which everyone can study, work and participate in university life.

By sharing UCL’s EDI policies and The University of Osaka’s initiatives to support disabled students and employ disabled people, the seminar will explore barriers embedded in university systems, environments and everyday interactions, and the challenges involved in removing them. The panel discussion will provide an opportunity for participants to consider actions they can take in their own roles and to put inclusion into practice at UOsaka.

The seminar date also falls within Japan’s Week of Persons with Disabilities (3–9 December). The event also reflects the week’s aim of promoting understanding of disabled people and their participation in society.
